The results of the “Deloitte 2008 Ethics & Workplace” survey show that employers and leadership’s openness and transparency with their staff leads to a more productive workplace and a more ethical workplace culture.

The survey, conducted by Opinion Reseach on behalf of Deloitte, reveals that open and honest communication between employees and their bosses about issues such as work-life balance significantly improves the workplace culture. 72 percent of respondents feel that if their leadership were more upfront about their need to take personal time off during work hours, the work environment would be more productive.

The results indicate a strong relationship between greater transparency and ethical behaviour at work. As many as 84 percent of respondents feel that their bosses’ openness contributes to a more ethical culture.

Another thing that improves productivity according to the study is a better work-life balance. As many as 81 percent of working adults take advantage of flexible work arrangements. 75 percent of respondents feel that everyone in their workplace is treated equally when it comes to customized work hours, but only 50 percent say that the leaders tend to set different standards for themselves.

Deloitte’s Chairman of the Board Sharon L. Allen says:

“Today’s workforce demands a more ‘customized’ career path and a tremendous amount of flexibility. One size fits all no longer attracts or retains the best talent. By promoting open and honest communications across organizations and setting the tone at the top, our survey tells us that the workforce of today can be motivated in different ways. This is increasingly critical to retaining talent and preserving the health of today’s organizations.”
