IT jobs in short supply

Online recruitment for IT jobs is in decline, with fewer adverts being posted for IT vacancies, warns Monster.com.

The number of new IT jobs being advertised dropped to 108 in August, compared to 124 in August 2007. Earlier this year, the number of IT vacancies had risen to 150 and they have been steadily decreasing since February.

The online recruitment firm says that its latest employment index indicates a significant slowdown in IT recruitment, but also in most other sectors. Jobs are still rising in areas that require skills such as PR and marketing, transport, healthcare and engineering.

Hugo Sellert, head of economic research at Monster Worldwide, says: “Previously, job seekers had the upper hand in the labour market, but the balance is now shifting. The recent decline in the index shows jobs are now getting harder to come by as businesses across the UK ease back on their hiring in response to the slowing economy.”
