IT consulting firm Accenture has helped the U.S. Army deploy release 1.2 of the Army's financial system at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. The new system, known as the General Fund Enterprise Business System (GFEBS), integrates financial management capabilities and prepares the army for department-wide deployment. The successful implementation of the current release sets the stage for Army-wide GFEBS implementation by 2012.

Accenture has worked with the Army's Program Executive Office, Enterprise Information Systems, on GFEBS since July 2005, when it won the contract to design, build, deploy and maintain the system. The system is expected to consolidate and subsume about 84 existing information systems down the line.

Release 1.2 has been in development since September 2006, after a successful demonstration of GFEBS' ability to meet information requirements necessary to run and support the management of real property inventory, part of the Army's general fund.

The new release of GFEBS serves as the global design for all of the Army to provide organizations with new business processes in seven areas, including financial management, real property and cost management.

Eric Stange, managing director of Accenture's Defense practice, said:

“The system enables the Army to standardize and streamline its financial business processes so that it can provide continuous access to accurate, reliable and timely financial information across the entire organization. That access will enable the Army to make better decisions and provides for improved compliance and accountability.”

Accenture is simultaneously developing release 1.3, which will additionally improve the functionality of GFEBS to provide general fund financial management, asset management and real property capabilities at all garrisons and tenant organizations Army-wide
